Having navigated the process of seeking solar installation for our own home, we’ve experienced firsthand the challenges of dealing with large corporations. It often felt like we were overlooked, especially since many of their employees were working remotely rather than being locally based. The process was frustrating—larger companies were slow to respond, and when they did, the representatives often lacked product knowledge. We were shuffled between departments, with little continuity or accountability. Delays were common, as employees would take vacations without updating us, leaving proposals incomplete and delaying the process. On one occasion, we received conflicting revisions from two employees with identical materials but different pricing, highlighting a lack of internal communication. Ultimately, we canceled our contract, worried that post-installation service or claims would be a logistical nightmare.
We also encountered numerous online ads from solar companies offering what seemed like incredible deals—low prices and instant quotes. However, as diligent researchers, we investigated further before reaching out. What we discovered was troubling: many of these “budget-friendly” companies had poor reviews on BBB and online forums. They often outsourced installations to random contractors who became unresponsive once the job was done, leaving homeowners with defective systems and no support.
During this time, we delved into researching solar panels and battery brands to understand why certain companies recommended specific materials. This exploration sparked an interest in DIY solar solutions. Eventually, we decided to install our own permitted system at home. Within a year, we had helped two friends install solar systems in their homes and partnered with a contractor friend to launch our solar business, Electrified Home, Inc.
